Substituting for Salt

It is always good to have examples of salt substitutes on hand when one is cooking or baking. Salt is healthy because it has iodine. For this reason, it prevents Goiter and other conditions that are found in poorer countries.

However, sometimes people need to cut back on salt intake due to the doctor’s instructions. So, a person might want to use sage in cooking instead to give some flavor. Sage has a slightly salty taste, so it is a compatible fix. Mr. Dash is a popular blend of herbs that gives flavor without all the salt.

In baking, people might want to add vanilla instead of salt. This will give the dish a flavor that will enhance other flavors. Really this is what salt does for a dish- it enhances other flavors.

A person can play around and be creative with flavorings if salt has to be excluded from the dish.
